Differentiated Instruction with AI: Three Difficulty Tiers and SEN Adaptations from One Topic, Automatically

The biggest barrier to differentiation has always been time. This article shows how AI generates foundation, core and challenge tasks under one learning objective, plus adapted versions for dyslexia, ADHD and non-Chinese-speaking students, with a practical flow for assigning and tracking.

Short answer: the hard part of differentiation was never the idea; it was the time needed to prepare three sets of materials plus SEN versions for every topic. AI compresses that from three hours to fifteen minutes — provided the teacher first fixes the learning objective and the cognitive level of each tier.

Why differentiation rarely survives in the classroom

A teacher with 20 lessons a week who prepares three tiers per lesson and adapts for SEN students — even at half an hour per tier — faces 30 hours of preparation weekly. So differentiation appears only during lesson observations. AI's role is to take over the repetitive job of producing versions.

The AI generation flow (15 minutes)

  1. Input: subject, grade, unit, objectives, class context (ability spread, SEN types).
  2. Generate three tiers: ask the AI to state each tier's cognitive level, objectives covered and answers.
  3. Generate adaptations: apply rules for the specified SEN types.
  4. Teacher check: 5 minutes correcting wording and difficulty.
  5. Assign: allocate starting points by student list, or let students choose.

The direction of adaptation is the teacher's / SENCO's call; the AI applies the rules to every material consistently.

Assigning and tracking

  • Starting points are not fixed: the same student can start at different tiers on different topics.
  • Track by objective mastery, not "which tier they are in".
  • Review every two weeks: who stays at foundation and needs what remediation? Who can move up?

Four ways to avoid labelling

  1. Name tiers by colour or icon.
  2. Print all three tiers on one worksheet or in one digital task.
  3. Let students choose where to start and encourage "try the next tier when done".
  4. Focus feedback on objective attainment, not tier.

Classroom example: S1 English reading

One 350-word text. Foundation asks students to find topic sentences; core asks what examples the author uses to support the view; challenge asks for an 80-word rebuttal. The NCS version provides a bilingual glossary of 10 key words; the dyslexia version splits the text into 5 chunks with topic sentences in bold. All generated by AI in 12 minutes, corrected by the teacher in 5.
